In fact, there's an interesting bit about what made him decide Aerys needed to be murdered- it involves Ned Stark's father and brother- the former was cooked in his armor over wildfire, and the latter strangled himself in his attempt to save his father...
He's still kind of a dick, but... you gotta understand he's not quite about the slaughter, plunder, and rape like most other characters are (especially the ones on his 'side'...)
